Weekly Insight: Habits

Is there something stopping or blocking you from reaching your goals?

We all know that developing a plan or intention, consistent action, and staying the course helps us to attain our goals in theory, but this doesn't always work on its own.

I want to use the example of a diet. Millions of diets are out there, and each one probably works to varying degrees of success. There are healthy choices and unhealthy choices. I think I have tried them all. I spent my adult life on a diet, then off the diet, and then back on again.

I created goals, added exercise, and was motivated while I worked on the change; however, when my mind drifted to the hustle and bustle of life, old habits crept back in. What is that thing in your life that stops you from achieving your goal?

More than ten years ago, I had a health scare (quite the motivator). I needed to find a solution for my health problems and to lose weight. Over months, I took a long look at myself and realized that I needed more than just a diet and exercise plan.

I worked on myself, my ideas, habits and behaviours and saw the psychological changes I needed to make. What habits were blocking my success, and what could I do differently?

What were the specific habits that I needed to change? What are the new habits I need to put into my life?

I changed my mindset and thought about ways to take baby steps into developing new behaviours.

I needed accountability and motivational triggers to reinforce what I was doing. I walked, and I fell. I got up again, and after a year, I had lost 150 pounds.

I had support and accountability with family and friends, and I finally did it. That was quite an achievement in my life and altered my future and my health. I needed to identify the habits that were stopping me or causing me to stumble on the journey to weight loss, change my behaviours, and find a permanent solution.

I have been at my current weight now for five years. My story is not unique; we all want to accomplish things that seem insurmountable in our lives.

I have found three things that have to be in place and aligned to be able to achieve goals that are important to me.

They are mindset, motivation and strategy.

I've used this in my business life. I've used this in my professional life. I've used this in my personal life, and it works. I believe in results. Setting a goal is important, but achieving that goal can change your life.

Do you need a coach? Do you need help finding the motivation, the right mindset, and the strategies to overcome a habit or behaviour you want to change to find success in your life?
