Weekly Insight: Success

What does success mean to you?

Is it about setting specific professional goals, reaching your career milestones, aiming for that coveted promotion, or gaining recognition in your field? The key is to set your sights on a specific target.

Is it completing a difficult gym workout, lifting heavier weights, running farther than you have ever run, participating in a marathon or competition, or just meeting your exercise routine for a whole month?

Is it losing that last 10 pounds you’ve been trying to lose forever?

Do you feel that in life, you’re on a treadmill? Working really hard on the inclines and declines, expending a lot of energy to hit great speeds, but not moving forward? A specific plan will help you get there.

My daughter and business partner, Kristen, had a big project. She completed her undergraduate degree in business last month and took her PMP exam yesterday. She is now a project manager and excelled in her university courses. She had a specific plan with milestones. She had ups and downs, but she had me as her accountability partner, and in the end, she was extremely successful.

My latest project is small.  I am working to complete my activity rings on my watch daily. Sounds simple. I have an accountability partner in my daughter, who gets a notification every time I close my rings. I’m accountable to her. I’ve just completed my 152nd day in a row by working on my plan. This means a combination of an hour of varied cardio and then 15 minutes of lifting weights daily. I plan to make it to 180 days, and I am well on my way.

Whatever success means to you, develop a step-by-step plan with specific milestones and rewards to celebrate your achievements. You have to know where you’re heading and when you will arrive.

Remember, every success, no matter how big or small, is a reason to celebrate! It's these moments of joy that keep us motivated and moving forward.

I like celebrating by doing something special for myself, like spending a couple of hours with friends and a glass of wine, going for a walk, buying something special, or treating myself to a massage or haircut. When I hit my 180th day, I am going to upgrade my iPad.

Have you written a plan to help you meet your goals? Do you need a coach to help you make a plan for your success?
