Weekly Insight: Dream Big

"If your dreams don't scare you, they are too small" – Richard Branson

Do you have big dreams for your future? Your impact as a professional? Your impact on the world? Have you clarified what your big dreams look like, and have you got a plan to reach them?

Having a clear destination in mind is crucial. It's like having a roadmap that guides you on your journey. Without it, you might find yourself lost, unsure if you're on the right path or when you'll reach your destination.

Dreaming big is more than just setting ambitious goals. It's about envisioning a future that's beyond your current reality.  These big dreams serve as a powerful source of motivation, pushing you to step out of your comfort zone and pursue your passions with unwavering determination. They also present opportunities for personal growth, as they often require you to learn new skills and overcome challenges.

Big dreams often lead to innovative thinking. When you aim high, you're more likely to come up with creative solutions to obstacles. Dreaming big can expand your perspective, opening up new possibilities and opportunities you might not have considered otherwise. Pursuing big dreams helps build courage and resilience. It teaches you to face and overcome fears, a crucial component of personal development.

Early in my career, I took time out to be home with my three children. We had moved across the country, so I was building our lives and rebuilding a support system.

I looked after my children and family while my husband worked full-time. I then thought long and hard about what I would do when I returned to my career.

I realized I would need more education to get the job I envisioned. With a five-year-old, a two-year-old and a baby, all I could do for the next five years was dream.

When I went back to work, I continued to dream.

I found dissatisfaction with the job that I had taken, both because of the erratic shift work and because of the needs of my small children and husband. I looked into what kind of university provided the flexibility to work around full-time employment and a growing family. I couldn’t see beyond how we could afford the tuition, how I could find the time to study, and how this would all work out.

Within three months, I had a plan and registered. My first courses were difficult as I hadn’t been in school for years, and the scheduling was terrible. I learned and grew.

Two years later, I achieved my BSN, and two and a half years after that, I earned my MSN. My education was not only in the university coursework but also in scheduling my time, focusing my energy to ensure my family and my job were taken care of, and figuring out how to balance. My learnings were life lessons.

Striving for big dreams requires learning new skills, overcoming challenges, and growing.
