Weekly Insight: Growth Mindset

I am reading a fascinating book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, by Psychologist Carol Dweck. She believes that your abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication, hard work, and learning.

"In a growth mindset, challenges are exciting rather than threatening. So rather than thinking, oh, I'm going to reveal my weaknesses, you say, wow, here's a chance to grow." This radical mind shift brings positivity to your life, increasing your productivity. How can we make this shift?

By embracing Challenges! See challenges as opportunities to learn rather than obstacles. Tackling difficult tasks can enhance your skills and increase your efficiency over time.

After the birth of my son, I returned to work and found scheduling between my work and my husband's work difficult. We had a babysitter who lived next door; however, he could only watch him on weekends.

My husband tried to work weekends and take time off during the week, but that didn't always work, and I worked the swing shift, which made things even worse.

I spoke to the hospital's human resources department to find a job where I would work Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I could still work full-time hours, but we could schedule our lives around my work.

The only solution they had was for me to work in the ICU. This was a radical change from where I was working, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized it was the right solution. I had to take extra training and looked at learning the new skills as exciting. I embraced the new challenges, the new position, and the new learning, and I grew.

Learn from Criticism. Constructive feedback is valuable for growth. Instead of feeling discouraged by criticism, use it as a guide to improve and develop better strategies.

Persist in the Face of Setbacks. Understand that setbacks are a natural part of the learning process. Persistence is key to overcoming obstacles and continuing to grow.

Celebrate Effort, Not Just Results. Focus on the effort you put into tasks rather than just the outcomes. This encourages a love for learning and improvement.

Adopt a 'Not Yet' Attitude. When you encounter something you can't do yet, remind yourself that you can learn it with time and effort. This shift in thinking promotes resilience and continuous learning.

Seek Learning Opportunities. Constantly look for ways to learn and grow. This could be through reading, taking courses, seeking mentorship, or experimenting with new techniques.

Surround Yourself with a Growth-Oriented Community. Engage with people who have a growth mindset. Their attitudes and behaviours can inspire and motivate you to adopt similar approaches.

Reflect on Your Progress. Regularly take time to reflect on your growth journey. Recognize the progress you've made and identify areas where you can continue to improve.

Be Curious. Cultivate curiosity by asking questions, exploring new areas, and being open to new experiences. Curiosity drives learning and innovation.

Practice Self-Compassion. Be kind to yourself when things don't go as planned. Understand that growth is a process, and mistakes are opportunities to learn and improve.

Change comes from an alignment of motivation, mindset and strategies. Developing a growth mindset helps you cultivate the abilities and intelligence to accomplish any of your goals to build the life you want.
